Marie Island is a 3 km long island off the Graham coast of Graham Land on the Antarctic Peninsula . It is located immediately north of Cape Evensen .
Participants of the Fourth French Antarctic Expedition (1903-1905) under the direction of the polar explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot named an alleged headland in the vicinity of Cape Evensen as Pointe Marie . Namesake is a sister of Charcot. During the Fifth French Antarctic Expedition (1908-1910) Charcot transferred the name to the southern foothills of an island, which he called Île Waldeck-Rousseau . Measurements by the British Graham Land Expedition (1934-1937) under the direction of the Australian polar explorer John Rymill showed that Charcot's supposed island is actually Waldeck-Rousseau Peak on the Antarctic mainland. In order to preserve Charcot's name, Rymill transferred it to the island described here.
