Together with the photographer Franz Xaver Setzer , Marie Karoline Tschiedel ran a renowned photo studio in Vienna in the first half of the 20th century . Over a period of around 70 years, a large number of portraits of famous artists and well-known representatives of public life in Vienna were created there. Not only around 20,000 negatives have been preserved, but also the historical studio with a large part of the original furnishings.

Life

Tschiedel, born in Vienna in 1899, attended the Imperial and Royal Graphic Education and Research Institute in Vienna from 1915 to 1918 - department for photography and reproduction processes. She specialized in portrait photography, retouching (especially negative retouching) and copying processes. She then worked until 1920 as an operator, retoucher and balancer at the Austrian Photographic Society .

In April 1920, at the age of 20, she entered the service of the Viennese society photographer Franz Xaver Setzer and from then on worked as an assistant in his studio in Vienna- Neubau , Museumstrasse 5. When the previous technical manager of the studio left the company in 1934, she took over his position. On November 26, 1935, she passed her master craftsman examination.

After the death of Franz Xaver Setzer , she acquired the studio from the estate of his heirs and continued to run it under the name "Photoatelier Setzer-Tschiedel" at the original address. Since the house was badly damaged by a bomb hit towards the end of the war, work in the studio was only possible to a limited extent. The Russian and American occupation authorities confiscated the studio and archive in 1945, which remained closed until June 16, 1946. In 1979 she quit her professional career due to illness.

The Setzer-Tschiedel studio

The photo studio Franz Xaver Setzer was founded in 1909. The clientele mainly included personalities from politics and business, as well as actors, singers and composers. Since the death of Marie Tschiedel, the estate (around 20,000 negative plates) has been continued by Wolfgang Tschiedel as the “Photo Archive Setzer-Tschiedel” at the historic location in the studio in Museumstrasse.
