Life

Marie Louise of Schleswig-Holstein

Princess Marie Louise was the second daughter of Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg (1831-1917) and his wife Princess Helena of Great Britain and Ireland (1846-1923), third daughter of Queen Victoria of Great Britain and Ireland and Prince Consort Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha .

On July 6, 1891, Princess Marie Louise married the German-born Prince Aribert von Anhalt (1864-1933), the fourth son of Duke Friedrich I. von Anhalt and Princess Antoinette von Sachsen-Altenburg, at Windsor Castle . Best man was her cousin (first degree) Kaiser Wilhelm II. The marriage was annulled on December 13, 1900, because of Prince Aribert's homosexuality . After the unhappy marriage, Princess Marie Louise devoted herself to social and artistic activities.

The First World War fell during the tenure of King George V (1910-1936) . Because of the opposition of the Imperial German Empire and Great Britain in this war, he renamed the House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to House Windsor on July 17, 1917 because of its German name . Since her father gave up his German name, she received the title Her Highness Princess Marie Louise .
