Marie Odermatt-Lussy

Marie Odermatt-Lussy (born June 5, 1891 in Stans ; † October 8, 1971 there ) was a Swiss writer and folklorist in the canton of Nidwalden .

Life

Marie Odermatt, née Lussy, was the daughter of Josef Lussy (1860–1945) and Philomena Widmer (1863–1912). Her brother Gustav Lussy was a successful ice hockey coach in the USA. In 1911 Marie Lussy married the antiquarian Josef Odermatt. Of her three children, the writer and painter Maria Generosa Christen-Odermatt (1921–2014) is best known.

Marie Odermatt-Lussy was involved in history, legends and dialect research and often appeared as a narrator. She campaigned for the preservation of customs in Nidwalden, for example for caroling in Stans. She published on the history of the Nidwalden costumes and helped to redesign them. In 1928 she founded the traditional costume association in Stans and the surrounding area.

From 1940 to 1971 she published numerous publications, and from 1949 to 1971 she presented the results of her folklore research and radio plays in more than 150 radio programs . In the 1960s she also told sagas and stories on Swiss television . In public she was also under the abbreviation MO-L. known.

In 2000, SRG posthumously awarded the SRG Central Switzerland Media Prize to Marie Odermatt-Lussy and presented it to the “Women in Nidwalden and Engelberg - History and Stories” association, which had made a contribution to Marie Odermatt-Lussy's life's work.
