The Mariengrotte Freiburg-Littenweiler is located in Freiburg im Breisgau in the Littenweiler district and was inaugurated in 1934 . She belongs to the parish of St. Barbara . In the parish it is called the Lourdes Grotto . Until the end it consisted of the statue of Mary and a spring emerging from the stone.

The Grotto is located in a former quarry of Hochrütte Dobels and can be reached only on foot. Starting from the parking lot at the end of Sonnenbergstrasse, on the hiking trail in the direction of Kappel Hörchersberg, after approx. 500 meters on the right-hand side of the forest path.

history

The grotto was built by the local parishioners under the direction of Prefect Alfons Schlicht in a former quarry in the Freiburg Black Forest . The occasion was the donation of a lady who wanted to remain unknown, with the commission to exhibit a Lourdes Madonna in a place where people pray. So the quarry was redesigned and the grotto in Lourdes was modeled with a spring.

The 174 cm tall kneeling statue of the Virgin Mary was carved from maple by the Littenweiler wood sculptor Magnis Seeger and painted by Wilhelm Schäfer. The Mariengrotto was officially inaugurated on October 14, 1934. Next to the statue of the Virgin Mary you can find the figurative kneeling Bernadette Soubirous , who is said to have appeared to Maria in Lourdes in 1858. In 1942, the previous statue of the Virgin Mary was replaced by a concrete cast. In 2014, scouts renovated the memorial as part of a social project . Regular maintenance is carried out by private individuals. Some time ago the statue of the Virgin Mary was removed for reasons not publicly stated.
