In 1466 Ital Reding the Younger was stabbed to death in Oberarth . His widow Anna Wagner had the Marienkapelle built on this site as a souvenir. Twice (1514 and 1745) the chapel was destroyed by floods from the Rigi-Aa and subsequently rebuilt. This is how today's chapel was built at its current location in 1751/53 . It was renovated in the 1960s and placed under the protection of the Swiss Confederation in 1967 .

The church is still owned by the Reding family and is maintained by a civil law foundation of the Arther line. From April 2000 to October 2001 it was extensively renovated and restored both inside and out. On this occasion, the chapel also received new bells. The old bells can be seen in front of the chapel.

In February 2012 the chapel was elevated to the status of St. Mary's or parish church by diocesan bishop Vitus Huonder .

Since 1978 the service has been celebrated in the traditional form of the Latin rite according to the Roman Missal of 1962. Since December 1999, mass has been read at least once a day in St. Mary's Church.
