Marienkirche (Siegen)
The St. Mary's Church is a Catholic church from the 18th century in the city of Siegen .
history
The Marienkirche was built by Jesuits between 1702 and 1725 according to the plans of the lay brother Anton Hülse , who was buried here. Construction began on March 29, 1702 in the presence of Prince Wilhelm Hyazinth . The foundation stone was laid by him and his second wife Maria Johanna Josepha on June 22, 1702, while other sources cite May 29, 1702. It is reported that the bricklayers received a tip of six talers as part of this. The poor financial situation of the Catholic community meant that the construction phase dragged on for two decades and the roof of the building was not completed until October 1722. Another two years passed before the wooden structure of the tower could be completed on October 16, 1724. After the pole was set up by the Leiendecker Bonnier on July 15, 1725, a procession to the inauguration ceremony took place on August 15 of the same year, with great participation from outside Catholics from the Cologne and Saynian areas.
While the church was only equipped with a small bell when it was completed, a large and two smaller ones were added in 1734. This was achieved thanks to the funding for the big bell, which was largely borne by the Hövel family from Fickenhütten, while the funds for the other two came from the victorious Agnese Breidenbach née Pfeifer. The architect of the building was lay brother Anton Hülse, who belongs to the order of the Siegen Jesuits and who was able to draw on his experience in building churches in the cities of Coesfeld, Paderborn and Münster. He was buried in St. Mary's Church on August 21, 1712. The church is located on the southern slope of the Siegberg on Löhrstrasse in Siegens Oberstadt. The sacred building in the Baroque style is the only one still preserved from this era in the city of Siegen. In the Marienkirche are the graves of members of the House of Nassau , who had their final resting place in the monastery church of St. Johannis , which was destroyed by the great city fire in 1695 . During the construction of the Marienkirche, the bones from the crypt of this Johanneskirche were reburied in the choir of the Marienkirche. In the years that followed, many respected citizens of Siegen were buried under the gallery supporting the organ and in front of the high altar, in front of the altar, for example, Father Hall, who was described as the father of the building and who died on February 3, 1734.
At the location of the Marienkirche, at the time of construction between the property Joh. Jac. Daubs and Joh. Peter Schumacher, there were four houses until the town fire mentioned.
In 1874, lightning struck the church tower, causing extensive damage to the entire church. During the great air raid on Siegen on December 16, 1944 in World War II , the roof and interior of the church were completely destroyed, the church tower collapsed and the entire building burned down to the foundation walls. After the war the church was rebuilt. A first confirmation ceremony took place in September 1947. In the autumn of the following year, the church tower was given a copper dome.
In August 2009 the church was named Monument of the Month by the Working Group on Historic Towns in North Rhine-Westphalia .
Bells
The four bells of the Marienkirche were cast in the V12 rib by the Bochumer Verein in 1948 . They have been hanging on cranked steel yokes in the tower since 1949 and ring the bell for Holy Mass.
All four bells together can only be heard on high feasts.
