The Marienkirche stands in the Ziegenhain district of the city of Jena in Thuringia .

location

The church is located east on the outskirts of the city of Jena between two mountain ridges at the end of the Ziegenhain valley in the rural surrounding area.

history

The Marienkirche Ziegenhain remained unfinished as a pilgrimage church and was used as the Ziegenhain church by the inhabitants of the valley since 1424. In the 14th century the pilgrimages to the image of Mary in the Marienkapelle increased, so that the burgrave of Kirchberg began building a worthy larger church. The high choir was created in the heyday of the Gothic period . The defense tower in the west was built at the end of the 15th century. Both in the Saxon fratricidal war and in the Reformation , there was a decline in interest and the decay of the church began. In the 17th century, the choir was therefore separated from the three-aisled nave and a makeshift ceiling was put in so that the Ziegenhain had a church again.

New beginning

In the last years before 2000 the church was extensively restored. The choir, which served as the church interior, was restored. There is now a room under the organ gallery that serves as a winter church . The unfinished room of the church was cleared for the first time in the history of the house. Events are now taking place there, such as: choir concerts, open-air events, etc. The site is also included in church activities, i.e. as a meeting place.

The organ

The organ by Justinus Ehrenfried Gerhard , consecrated for the first time in 1764, was not playable for 15 years, was repaired and inaugurated again on August 26, 2001.

Works of art

Today the church has only a few works of art, including a fresco with the three local mountain castles of Jena .
