The Marian column is a red marble column crowned by a statue of Mary in the middle of Marienplatz , in the center of Freising's old town . The column is one of the most distinctive monuments in the historic old town. It was donated by Prince-Bishop Albrecht Sigismund in 1674 for the veneration of Mary as Patrona Bavariae . The Marian column on Marienplatz in Munich may have served as a model .

Similar to its counterpart there, the Freising Marian Column was built on a mighty, square marble base. A saint kneels at each of the four corners: the cathedral patrons Korbinian and Sigismund , as well as Francis Xavier and Francis of Assisi .

The following inscriptions were carved into the base.

On the south side:

This column has
commemorating received benefits,

After the Pope's visit in 2006, a lettering reminding of the event was placed on the south side of the base .
