history

The village of Obervolkach had already suffered from the great wars in earlier times. The respective village lords repeatedly scrutinized the male residents of the place for a warlike emergency. In the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 and 1871, a total of 20 Obervolkacher had to take up arms and fought for the Kingdom of Bavaria . With seven dead, the village had to pay a heavy toll in blood.

The village community began building the Marian Column in 1896 on the twenty-fifth anniversary of peace. It was dedicated to the dead of the war and at the same time represents a war memorial . The column was erected in front of the parish church, it has since formed the center of the village and is surrounded by the so-called three linden trees. The Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments classifies the Marian Column as an architectural monument .

description
