The St. Nicholas Church in Obervolkach is the parish church of the Catholic community and the landmark of the Lower Franconian village. It stands in the middle of the village on Schwesternstrasse.

history

A church in Obervolkach was mentioned for the first time in 1443. The document declares the elevation of the village to a parish . The probably chapel-like church had low, narrow window reveals and was a fortified church surrounded by Gaden .

During the tenure of Bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn , a pointed helmet was put on in 1614 and the nave was extended. This is stated by the weathered inscription above the portal: “Bishop Julius in the regiment / laudably completed the 40th year / brings religion back, / and with the help of his subjects / he restores the church, / also rebuilds the schoolhouse, / everything like that only for happiness and a blessing / the faithful prince is devoted to God ”.

In 1774 an external staircase was built to access the gallery .

In 1953 the neo-Gothic altars were removed. In 1976 the floor area of the church was expanded by two thirds, it received more modern heating and was consecrated again in 1977.

The building is listed by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation under monument number D-6-75-174-276. The underground remains of previous buildings are classified as ground monuments.

architecture

The church is executed in the forms of the late Gothic . The three-storey tower was erected directly above the choir as the Julius Echter tower . The floors are recognizable from the outside through cornices . The extension from the 20th century is slightly set back. The nave is flat-roofed and has pointed arch windows. The portal of the sacristy is ogival. The choir has a ribbed vault . During the renovation, the floor was covered with Franconian Jura tiles, a spiral staircase leads to the gallery.

Furnishing

Bells

The ringing consists of four bells , the oldest of which, made by the Otto foundry in Bremen , dates from 1934. The other bells came into the church in 1950. Their predecessors probably fell victim to the melting of bells in World War II.

Further equipment

One of the few preserved pieces of the old church furnishings is the shell- decorated organ from 1774, which is attributed to the organ builder Franz Seuffert .

In 1954 the church received a new equipment. The altar designed by the artist Ludwig Sonnleitner depicts the Holy Trinity . The assistant figures are a Rococo Madonna from 1780e to the right of the choir arch and a figure of the church patron Nicholas to the left of the choir.

The font in the extension dates from the late 16th century.

Three figures of saints from the Obervolkach cemetery chapel adorn the left nave wall: a figure of John the Baptist from the 15th century, the Mother of God from 1510 and an Urban figure that was created around 1490.
