Field Chapel (Volkach)

The field chapel on the outskirts of Volkach

A small field chapel is located on the outskirts of the town of Volkach am Main . Hikers from the now incorporated Dimbach reached this refuge shortly before arriving in Volkach. Today it is located next to the KT 10 district road in the "Steinbruch" parcel.

History and architecture

The chapel goes back to a foundation by Georg Karl Schmitt and his wife Sabina. The year of the foundation is 1897. This is evidenced by an inscription on a sandstone slab on the right wall of the chapel: “The [se] [chapel] was built / [...] and his dear mother Maria / by Georg Karl Schmitt / and his wife Sabina / in 1897. "

The chapel is a quarry stone building with a pyramid roof. A column capital from the Baroque era is walled into the back wall . Inside there is a Pietà on an altar plinth. Underneath there is another inscription: “O all of you / who pass by on the path / turn and see whether a pain / is like my pain!” The chapel has a floor area of six square meters. The Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation lists the hall chapel under monument number D-6-75-174-153.
