The Michaelskapelle in front of the cemetery

The St. Michael chapel in Obervolkach is located directly in front of the cemetery of the Volkach district in Michaelistraße.

history

The chapel was built in 1716 under the Würzburg prince-bishop Johann Philipp von Greiffenklau . The cemetery portal was built in 1606 with the cemetery. In 1607 the church was consecrated by the auxiliary bishop Eucharius Sang . Renewals and renovations took place over the centuries. The chapel was restored in 1894, followed by a further renovation in 1965/1966 and a third in the 1980s.

The Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation classifies the chapel and the cemetery wall as architectural monuments under the number D-6-75-174-287. Archaeological remains are listed as a ground monument.

architecture

The little church presents itself as a simple building. A drafted choir limits it; it closes with a triangle. A small longhouse has no special features. The building is structured only by a window axis. The windows have bent pointed arches , which is reminiscent of the late Gothic. A six-sided, coupled roof turret with a bell crowns the nave facing the street . An inscription above the portal commemorates its construction in 1716.

The neighboring cemetery portal consists of a round arch . Three stone slabs with reliefs are embedded above. From left to right they show a crucifixion group with assistant figures , a coat of arms of Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn with the year 1606 and the inscription of the village magistrate next to five coats of arms and several dates.

Furnishing

The interior of the chapel is dominated by the two-column altar created in 1716. Its altarpiece shows the Archangel Michael , the church patron. It is crowned by a Pietà from the beginning of the 16th century. The assistant figures represent Saint John (right) and Saint Korbinian (left). Below Korbinian there is a bear figure.

Wooden busts of St. Odilia and an abbess stand on consoles . The skull has been removed from the figure, so that an exact name is not possible. The two figures were created around 1520. Another, larger Pietà and a statue of Christ complete the furnishings of the chapel. The Christ Resting was created in the 18th century. Other figures that originally stood in the Michael's Chapel are now in the Obervolkach Church of St. Nikolaus .
