The Marientor is a square in the south of Duisburg's old town. It gets its name from one of the four main gates of Duisburg , as shown in the plan by Johannes Corputius from 1566.

On the plan, the city wall bends and runs like a ring around the church: after the expansion of the city wall in the 13th century along the Unterstrasse and Marientorstrasse, the wall now also enclosed the Marienkirche.

The gate was immediately northwest of the old Marienkirche . Like the stacking gate , it was demolished in 1820. The gate was secured by a forecourt and moat. The Dickelsbach flowed directly in front of the gate . In the Corputius plan, it is spanned by a bridge.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the square marked the entrance to Duisburg's business district with Beekstrasse and Münzstrasse, which led to the Alter Markt and Burgplatz with the Salvatorkirche .

Until 1979 the tram drove over the Marientorplatz. In 1974, the Marientor Bridge was built, which led across the square as a stub road to the A2 federal motorway (now the A40 federal motorway) and made the square increasingly unsightly.

The aging bridge needs urgent renovation . However, the city lacks the money. The complete renovation of Marientorplatz is estimated at a cost of at least 15 million euros. In 2016, it was decided to renovate the bridge initially by 2018 for 3 million euros. In addition, the "accident-prone road network under the bridge", which is Duisburg's busiest inner-city hub, is to be optimized for 2.5 million euros.
