Marina Vladimirovna Orlova ( Russian Марина Владимировна Орлова , English transcription Orlova ; born December 10, 1980 in Arsamas , Gorky Oblast ) is a Russian English student who gained international fame as the operator of an English-language YouTube channel.

Her You Tube channel HotForWords , which has existed since 2007 , is primarily concerned with the etymology of English words and idioms.

Life

Marina Orlowa was born in 1980 in Arzamas (Nizhny Novgorod Oblast), RSFSR , Soviet Union . She studied philology at the Lobachevsky University in Nizhny Novgorod . After graduating, she briefly taught English and literature in Moscow . In an interview she stated that she had worked in a shop for two years before she was able to take part in an international exchange program as an au pair . She came to live with a family with two children in a small town near San Francisco . She found out about YouTube through a friend and published the first videos on her YouTube channel HotForWords in spring 2007 , which became the most successful subscription channel there within a year.

Orlowa lives in an apartment in Beverly Hills .

Marina Orlowa produces five to seven content- related video clips a week , most of which deal with a single etymological dictionary entry. The clips are two to five minutes long and often, but not always, contain the following elements:

  • Recurring greetings and commendations

  • Announcement of the winner of the "Teacher's Pet" election
  • Overlays of photographs by Marina Orlowa in the posing style of the fashion industry
