Borkum naval base
The naval base Borkum was a base of the Federal Navy on the island of Borkum , which existed from 1957 to 1996.
Tasks, organization and subordination
The Borkum naval base was managed by the Borkum naval base command set up in 1957, which was subordinate to the North Sea naval section command. From 1967 to 1974 it was under the North Sea Marine Division , then the newly established North Sea Marine Section Command .
On April 1, 1962, previously was the Naval Base Command Wilhelmshaven belonging base Emden the naval base Borkum assumed as a branch. On October 1, 1966, the Borkum Marines First Aid Squadron was set up and subordinated to the base command.
The naval base was responsible for supplying all commands and facilities belonging to the base area and all floating units calling at the base. For this he had berths, floating, fixed and mobile supply organs, repair facilities and a paramedic.
On October 1, 1986, the Borkum naval base command was dissolved and the base was placed under the newly established Emden naval base command. After the naval stations stationed there had been withdrawn, the base was closed on June 30, 1996. The port facilities went into civil use. The SAR branch will continue to exist, but will only be manned when necessary.
Supported associations and units
A number of changing naval formations and units were stationed at the base and in the Borkum siting area, which were supported by the base, but were not subordinate to the naval base command.
This mainly included parts of the amphibious group :
- 2nd landing squadron (1958–1968)
- Coastal Handling Battalion 2 (set up in Borkum in 1960 and relocated to Emden that same year)
- Beach master company (1965–1972)
- Heavy Amphibious Transport Company 2 (1965–1969)
- 1st landing squadron (1968–1977)
In addition, the following were stationed in Borkum:
- 8th Mine Sweeping Squadron (1962–1963)
- Seamanship teaching group (1969–1996)
- Marinefliegergeschwader 5 - Borkum branch as SAR base (since 1964)
