Mario Bonfantini

Mario Bonfantini (born May 15, 1904 in Novara , † November 23, 1978 in Turin ) was an Italian anti-fascist , author, Romanist , Frenchist , Italianist and translator.

life and work

Bonfantini was the son of Giuseppe Bonfantini (from 1915 to 1922 socialist mayor of Novara). He studied in Turin, but was unable to pursue a university career during the time of fascism for political reasons. He got involved in the Italian Resistance , was arrested, fled the train that was supposed to take him to the Mauthausen concentration camp , and joined the partisan republic of Ossola . From 1955 to 1961 he was professor of French language and literature at the University of Naples , then in the same position at the University of Turin . Bonfantini wrote novels and (with Mario Soldati ) film scripts. He translated Rabelais , Baudelaire, Proust and other authors into Italian.
