Mario Krammer (born July 11, 1880 in Berlin ; † February 15, 1953 there ) was a German historian .

Life

After attending grammar school, Krammer studied history from 1899 at the Berlin University and in the meantime at the University of Marburg . He specialized in medieval constitutional and legal history . He joined Karl Zeumer , who researched German constitutional history. In his dissertation he dealt with the history of the Electoral College ; then Zeumer placed him as an employee at the Monumenta Germaniae Historica , where he was responsible for editing the sources on older German history.

Krammer worked for the Monumenta on the publication of the Lex Salica . With regard to the transmission history of this source, he took a view that fundamentally differed from previous research and that he used as the basis for the planned publication. On the other hand, the archivist and legal historian Bruno Krusch as a member of the central management of the MGH vehemently objected. A review by several expert reports led to the withdrawal of the already completed edition by the central management in 1915. The books that had already been printed were crushed with the exception of a few specimen copies for the MGH library. Krammer worked as editor of the New Archives of the Society for Older German History from mid-1923 and looked after the MGH library located in the building of the Prussian State Library. Shortly before, Otto von Holten published a book about Theodor Fontane , with which Krammer entered the field of cultural history . Three years later, the similar work appeared, The Rebirth by Lagarde . In 1924 he was appointed a councilor, but then quit his job to live as a freelance writer. In 1935 he published Berlin and the Reich (2nd edition udT Berlin in the course of the centuries ). Since he was excluded from the " Reichsschrifttumskammer ", the letters he edited from the Germans from a millennium in 1943 could not appear under his name. After the end of National Socialism , he took part in the reconstruction of the adult education center in Charlottenburg , where from then on he regularly gave courses. He tried to position himself as a representative of the German cultural nation, for example through his contribution to the anthology Helden ohne Waffen by Günther Birkenfeld (1947) on Giordano Bruno, Galilei, Keppler and through numerous contributions to the Berlin Yearbook . Shortly before his death he took part in a commemorative publication for the "Congress of Teachers and Educators", which was held in Berlin in 1952.
