Mario Tobino

Mario Tobino (born January 16, 1910 in Viareggio , † December 12, 1991 in Agrigento ) was an Italian writer and psychiatrist.

Life

Tobino began his professional career as a psychiatrist in Ancona , Bologna and Gorizia . From 1940 to 1942 he was a soldier in Libya ; He made use of the impressions there in Il deserto della Libia , published in 1951 . After his return he joined the resistance movement. After the war he was head of the psychiatric clinic in Maggiano near Lucca from 1948 to 1980 .

Tobino's work is strongly autobiographical, but also increasingly developed neorealistic traits.

In 1976 he received the Premio Viareggio , one of the most prestigious Italian literary prizes.
