Mario vs. Donkey Kong ( Japanese マ リ オ vs. ド ン キ ー コ ン グ , Mario vs. Donkī Kongu ) is a video game that was produced in 2004 for the Game Boy Advance . It is the first part of the “Mario vs. Donkey Kong ”series. The 6-part series (as of 2015) also includes:

action

When Donkey Kong saw a commercial for the newly released Mini-Marios on television, he was immediately on fire to get one. But when he arrives at the toy store, he finds that they are all sold out. But since the monkey doesn't think about waiting for new releases, he storms the factory in which these figures are produced and steals a sack full. Mario, the owner of the factory, immediately goes on his heels.
In the last regular level you have to free the three toads (blue, red, yellow) from their prisons.

Game mechanics

The game takes up elements from early arcade games and Mario games. Mario has to either open a door in the levels to find the key or collect mini Marios that have fallen out of Donkey Kong's sack. He must accomplish both within a certain time limit. Each world consists of some collecting levels, a level in which he has to escort the mini-Marios into the toy box and a boss level in which a fight against Donkey Kong takes place.

As in the original Donkey Kong for the arcade, Mario is injured if he falls from a high platform, but can withstand a lot more here than in the original. The hammer that can already be used there is also available here, with which Mario can defeat any opponent. New actions are displayed on the screen at the beginning of the level in which they are learned. For example, Mario can walk on his hands with a certain key combination so that he can keep falling debris with his feet up. Mario can pick up objects and opponents and throw them against other opponents, which is known from Super Mario Bros. 2 - Mario Madness . Garbage cans can also be moved and used as platforms to cross dangerous places. In the jungle levels of this game, Mario also has to dodge opponents that he ironically used in Donkey Kong Jr. and fight them in the same way as he did back then. The mini-Marios that Mario collects in each world are implemented as an energy bar in the boss fights of each world, so that Mario - if he can find all the mini-Marios - can take six hits before he loses an attempt.

In each level - apart from the toy box levels and boss levels - three gift packages can also be collected, which give you additional points. Once you have collected them, you unlock a bonus game. There are two variants, but these packages always play a role. At the beginning it is shown which item is in which package, whereby they can be distinguished by the color of their ribbons. In the first game you have to choose a package and stop the arrow in time. In the second game, Donkey Kong tries to crush the packages with his fist; However, Mario can swap them with the directional key and receives the package that is left over at the end. You can get life mushrooms, whereby a green mushroom gives an additional life, a blue two, a purple three and a rare golden mushroom even five lives. However, if you get the Donkey Kong icon, you get nothing.

Trivia

This is the only game in the “Mario vs. Donkey Kong ”series in which Mario is playable. In the following games it is the Mini-Marios that you still have to collect in this game.
