Mariotte is an elongated impact crater in the southwest quadrant on the back of the moon and therefore can not be directly observed from Earth . It is located southwest of the smaller Das crater and northwest of the large Chebyshev crater .

The outline of Mariotte is extended by about five kilometers in a south-easterly direction , which gives the formation an egg-shaped appearance. The outer rim of the crater shows only minor traces of erosion and has a sharp-edged ridge. The crater floor is rough and uneven, especially in the southeast.
