Murakami is an impact crater in the southwest quadrant on the back of the moon and therefore can not be directly observed from Earth . It is located south-southeast of the Mariotte crater . To the southeast of Murakami and northeast of Mariotte is the small crater Das .

The almost circular, bowl-shaped crater partially overlaps the western edge of the satellite crater Mariotte Z. The crater rim shows some traces of erosion, including smaller craters that cover the ridge in the south and northeast. A bright patch of high albedo material is just west of Murakami.

Before Murakami was given his own name by the IAU in 1991 , he was referred to as "Mariotte Y".
