Marius Chaîne

Marius Chaîne (born August 10, 1873 in Tarascon , † January 19, 1960 in Sainte-Marie-du-Désert ) was a French Catholic priest and orientalist .

Life

After finishing school and studying in the seminaries of Aix-en-Provence, Marius Chaîne was ordained a Catholic priest for this diocese on June 29, 1897, but switched to the Jesuits a few months later, on September 29, 1897 . After the novitiate he received further training in Laval and Saint-Helier. He then worked 1901–1904 as a high school teacher for history and geography at religious schools in Marseille and Cairo. 1904–1905 he studied at the Faculté Orientale of the Université Saint-Joseph in Beirut. There he taught Coptic and Ethiopian from 1905 to 1908, as well as in Rome from 1908 to 1910 during postgraduate theological studies at the Gregorian . 1911–1913 he continued his oriental studies in Paris. In 1913 he received the professorship for Ethiopian, Coptic and Egyptian at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome. After only one year of study, he was at the beginning of World War I drafted as a medic, later chaplain and remained so until 1922. After that, he left the Society of Jesus and was born on June 23, 1922 diocesan priests of the diocese of Perpignan . He retired to Lévignac-sur-Save (Haute-Garonne) and worked for many years as a private scholar in his house "La Clairière". He felt deeply connected to the nearby Cistercian Abbey of Sainte-Marie-du-Désert, spent the last weeks of his life there and rests in the monastery cemetery there. He is one of the greats of European Ethiopian studies of the 20th century and created its tool of lasting importance.
