Marius Oprea (born May 22, 1964 in Târgovişte ) is a Romanian historian, poet and writer.

Life

Oprea studied archeology and history at the University of Bucharest and received his doctorate there with a thesis on the role of the Securitate between 1948 and 1964 ( Romanian Rolul și evoluția Securității, 1948-1964 ). In 1987 Marius Oprea was arrested for the first time by the Securitate , the former Romanian secret service. The student at the time had refused to join the Romanian Communist Party and distributed manifestos against Ceaușescu .

In 1997 he spent some time in Berlin , where he learned how to handle secret service files under Joachim Gauck at the Stasi records authority . He works for the Romanian Institute for Modern History ( Romanian Institutul Român de Istorie Recentă (IRIR) ). In 2006 he founded the Institute for Research into the Crimes of Communism in Romania ( Romanian Institutul de Investigare a Crimelor Comunismului în România (IICCR) ). After this institute, which was primarily devoted to research into political murders in Romania, was merged with the Institute for Research into Romanian Exile at the end of 2009 , Nobel Prize laureate Herta Müller campaigned for Oprea to continue to run the institute.

Oprea is a member of the Romanian Writers' Union ( Romanian Uniunea Scriitorilor din România ).
