Mariusz Szczygieł
Mariusz Szczygieł [ 'ʃtʃɨɟɛw ] (born September 5, 1966 in Złotoryja , Poland ) is a Polish journalist . In 2019, he was awarded the Nike Literature Prize for his report Nie ma .
Career
Szczygieł joined the daily Gazeta Wyborcza in 1989, the year it was founded , where he now heads the reporting department. As an author, he is particularly interested in the Czech Republic and Slovakia .
"Reality"
Mariusz Szczygieł became known in the German-speaking world with an article in the anthology From Minsk to Manhattan. Polish reports , published in 2006 by Zsolnay Verlag in Vienna . The report, entitled “Reality”, is about Janina Turek from Krakow , who for over 57 years carefully recorded each of her days in 728 notebooks without addressing her own thoughts or feelings. She received around 10,868 gifts, watched 70,042 programs on television, read 3,517 books, but we do not find out what she thought and felt. In addition to the anthology mentioned, the text has also appeared in the Vienna daily Die Presse (see web link below).
