Mark Braverman (* 1948 in Philadelphia ) is an American psychologist with Jewish roots.

Life

Braverman, grandson of a Palestinian Jew, grew up in a conservative Jewish family in Philadelphia. He worked as a psychologist and trauma therapist. He himself said that he was shaped by the idea that the world was hostile to the Jews and wanted to kill them or convert them forcibly. His mindset changed when he joined a majority Christian group of pilgrims to the Holy Land in 2006 and met Muslim, Christian and Jewish leaders. Now he has become an activist for peace in the Middle East and puts the political processes in a strong religious-historical context. He describes the Middle East conflict as the greatest crisis since the Babylonian exile . He thinks time is running out and a fundamental change is necessary.

During a visit to Germany, Braverman compared himself to Dietrich Bonhoeffer . He had the same interest in saving the church.

Positions

Braverman criticizes Israel's policy with regard to the occupation of the Palestinian territories and their Middle East policy, he also doubts the right of the State of Israel to exist and equates it with historical apartheid regimes. From this position he also supports the BDS movement.

He sees the cause of the harsh action against the Palestinians in the traditional Jewish belief that the people of Israel have been chosen by God from ancient times . Belief in election led to a Jewish triumphalism, which in turn led to the "ethnic cleansing of Palestine": "And just as Christian triumphalism, which found its expression in the theology of detachment , finally led to the cremation ovens at Auschwitz, so did Jewish triumphalism like his Find expression in political Zionism , for the ethnic cleansing of Palestine. "

Braverman believes that the Christian churches, for fear of being accused of anti-Semitism, would not dare to criticize Israel: “The accusation that one is anti-Semitic is the club that one wields in the bud of any open or critical discussion about the State of Israel In 2018 he called on the German Church (he does not distinguish between denominations) to criticize the State of Israel more clearly and to support boycott movements. He is invited by church and Palestine solidarity groups in Germany as well. For example, he gave a lecture at the German Evangelical Church Congress in June 2015 .

Critics accuse Braverman of indiscriminately criticizing and thereby promoting anti-Semitism disguised as solidarity with Palestine.
