Mark Donskoy ( Russian Марк Семёнович Донской ; born February 21 . Jul / 6. March  1901 greg. In Odessa , Russian Empire , now Ukraine ; †  24. March 1981 in Moscow ) was a Soviet film director and screenwriter .

Life

Donskoi studied medicine, law and music and initially wrote plays. He came to film in 1926, worked as a screenwriter and editor, and directed several short films. Together with the director Michail Awerbach, he also made feature films from 1928 and from the 1930s belonged to the "top guard of film directors in the USSR ". One of his most important works is the so-called Gorky Trilogy, which was created from 1938 to 1940.

Donskoi's works are characterized by realism and psychological credibility. In addition to film adaptations, he also shot works on contemporary history.

Awards

For Foma Gordejew , Donskoi was awarded the Vela d'Argento as best director at the Locarno International Film Festival in 1960 .

The mother ran in 1956 in competition at the Cannes International Film Festival . At the 1972 Cannes Film Festival , Donskoi was a member of the festival jury.
