Mark Francis (composer)

Mark Francis (* 1958 in Dunkirk , New York) is an American composer and music teacher.

Mark Francis studied with Walter Hartley , James Eversole , Rey Longyear , Joanne Castellani , Clare Callahan, and Joseph Fratianni, and earned a Doctor of Musical Art degree from the University of Kentucky . He has taught at Mississippi State University , Louisiana School for Math, Science and the Arts , Centenary College , Northwestern State University , Emory University , Agnes Scott College, and the Power Academic and Performing Arts Complex . He also appears as a guitarist and is a member of the Atlanta Mandolin Orchestra . He is also Treasurer of the Southeastern Composers League , Director of Education for the Florida Orchestra and Director of Education and Librarian of the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra .

He composed orchestral and chamber music, choral works, electroacoustic music and songs. In 2007, the Jackson State University Orchestra premiered its composition The Trumpet of Conscience, based on words by Martin Luther King, in the Library of Congress . It has received the ASCAP Standard Award ten times and the ASCAP Plus Award five times .
