Walter S. Hartley

Walter Sinclair Hartley (born February 21, 1927 in Washington, DC , † June 30, 2016 in Charlotte , North Carolina ) was an American composer and music teacher.

life and work

Hartley began composing at the age of five and studied at the Eastman School of Music until 1953 . His teachers included Burrill Phillips , Thomas Canning , Herbert Elwell , Bernard Rogers , Howard Hanson, and Dante Fiorillo .

He has taught at universities in five states, including teaching piano, music theory and composition at the Interlochen Center for the Arts and Davis & Elkins College in Elkins, West Virginia from 1956 to 1964 . From 1969 he worked at the State University of New York at Fredonia , even after his retirement in 1991 . In 2004 he moved to Charlotte, where he worked as composer in residence at the University of North Carolina .

Hartley composed over three hundred works that have been performed by ensembles such as the National Symphony Orchestra , the Oklahoma City Symphony Orchestra , the Eastman-Rochester Orchestra and the Eastman Wind Ensemble . Many of his compositions, especially for saxophone and deep brass, have become standard literature for these instruments.
