Burrill Phillips
Burrill Phillips (born November 9, 1907 in Omaha , Nebraska , † June 22, 1988 in Berkeley , California ) was an American composer.
Phillips studied at the Eastman School of Music with Howard Hanson and Bernard Rogers and taught here himself from 1933 to 1949. He became known with the orchestral work Selections from McGuffey's Reader (1933) based on a poem by Oliver Wendell Holmes and two poems by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow . Later he taught a. a. at the University of Illinois (1949-64), the Juilliard School of Music (1968-69) and Cornell University (1972-73). In addition to other orchestral works, Phillips a. a. an opera, ballets, choral works, chamber music, pieces for organ and piano as well as the music for the Oscar-winning documentary Nine from Little Rock (1964).
