The film portrays the nine African-American students who became the first black students to attend Little Rock Central High School in Little Rock , Arkansas in 1957 after desegregation . The students known as Little Rock Nine (Ernest Green, Jefferson Thomas, Elizabeth Eckford, Thelma Mothershed-Wair, Terrence Roberts, Carlotta Walls Lanier, Minnijean Brown Trickey, Gloria Ray Karlmak and Melba Pattilo Beals) tell of the events as soldiers walked had to protect school. They report on their experiences and their hopes.
