The Little Rock Central High School is a high school in Little Rock , the capital of the US state of Arkansas in the United States .
history
The school was built in 1927; At that time it was considered the most expensive and one of the largest and most beautiful schools in the United States, with construction costs of 1.5 million US dollars. In 1957, the school was the scene of disputes and reports that received worldwide attention. Three years after the school desegregation was officially desegregated, nine African American students, who later became known as the Little Rock Nine , were the first African American students to attend Little Rock Central High School . In order to deny these nine students access to the building, Orval Faubus , then governor of the state , started the National Guard on the first day of school . There was also unrest due to a demonstration by over 1000 angry whites. For a few days the Guard succeeded in preventing the Little Rock Nine from attending school ; then Faubus had to withdraw the guard as a result of a court decision. In addition, Dwight D. Eisenhower ( US President from 1953 to 1961) stood against him; Eisenhower placed all Arkansas police and army units under federal command and sent troops from the 101st Airborne Division to Little Rock to protect black students on the way to school and in the building.
1964 turned Charles Guggenheim a documentary on the Little Rock Nine , who with the Oscar for Best Short Documentary Award ( Nine from Little Rock ) .
