Thomas Canning

Thomas Canning (born December 12, 1911 in Brookville , Pennsylvania , † October 4, 1989 ) was an American composer and music teacher.

Canning studied composition at Oberlin College with Normand Lockwood (Bachelor 1936) and the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester with Howard Hanson and Bernard Rogers (Master 1940). He taught from 1936 to 1941 at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa and 1945-46 at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania . After a year at the Royal Conservatory of Music at the University of Toronto , he was a teacher at the Eastman School of Music from 1947 to 1963 . Until his retirement in 1977 he was a professor at West Virginia University .

In addition to a number of choral works, Canning u. a. a children's opera and chamber music. His Fantasy on a Hymn by Justin Morgan for double string quartet became famous. The keyboardist Tom Canning is his son.
