The NSU Konsul (351 OS-T and 501 OS-T) is a motorcycle that the NSU works , Neckarsulm , built in versions I and II with a 349³ or 498 cm³ engine at the beginning of the 1950s. It was the last NSU model in this displacement class. 14,213 pieces were produced in total.

Engine and power transmission

The Konsul's single-cylinder four-stroke engine largely corresponds to the engines of the pre-war models 351 OSL and 501 OSL. It has diagonally opposite overhead valves in a light-metal cylinder head, the underlying two camshafts drag lever , bumpers and rocker arms are operated. Similar to the Horex Regina, the bumpers move in a common protective tube, which gives the impression of an engine with a vertical shaft and an overhead camshaft . The Konsul has a double port exhaust, which means that the outlet forks in the cylinder head and ends in two exhaust pipes and pots. To the right of the rear wheel is the oil tank for the dry sump lubrication , which externally corresponds to the tool container on the opposite side. The consul has a Noris alternator that is driven by a chain. Unlike the pre-war models of the OSL series, the ignition timing is automatically adjusted by centrifugal force depending on the engine speed .

The engine and four-speed gearbox are arranged separately in a classic design and connected by a large aluminum chain case. The chain case encapsulates the duplex primary chain and the coupling. As in the past with English motorcycles, shifting is done with the right foot and first gear up. To upshift into the other gears, the gear lever is pushed down. Different gear ratios were available for solo or sidecar operation. A fully encapsulated single roller chain on the left side transfers the power to the rear wheel.

Frame and chassis

The NSU Konsul has a closed tubular bridge frame, telescopic fork with hydraulic damping and a likewise hydraulically damped telescopic straight path suspension on the rear wheel. A special feature of the rear suspension at that time was the "preload" with which it can be adapted to operation with a driver or a pillion passenger. The saddle is a swinging saddle with tension springs.

The motorcycle is largely enamelled in black and has decorative lines; the side parts of the tank, exhaust pipes and silencers as well as the handlebar are chrome-plated.

NSU consul for sports activities

For use in motorsport, NSU supplied an enhanced version of the Konsul II. The engine had only one exhaust duct (so-called single port system), exposed hairpin valve springs , larger valves, a modified camshaft and a larger carburetor. The power was 33 hp (24.3 kW).
