The NSU 7 1/2 PS was a racing motorcycle from NSU Motorenwerke , which was available for 1,300  marks .

History and technology

As early as 1904, NSU presented a racing motorcycle, the 7 HP with a water-cooled V-engine and 907 cm³ displacement. The less successful model was replaced in 1908 by two air-cooled versions with 793 and 1004 cm³ displacement.

The variant with larger displacement (bore / stroke: 80 × 100 mm) was supplied with gasoline via a spray nozzle carburetor and lubricated by means of a hand pump. It was ignited by a low-voltage magneto from Bosch . The engine was built into a tubular steel frame that was open at the bottom , the rear wheel remained unsprung, the front wheel was guided in an NSU suspension fork. The racing motorcycle, which was only equipped with a coaster brake, rolled on 24-inch balloon tires.

As early as 1908, racing motorcycles were able to achieve speeds of up to 114 km / h on various racetracks in Germany. The American Edward (Eddy) Lingenfelder reached a speed of 124 km / h on the oval track from Los Angeles in 1909 over the mile ; an unofficial world record for motorcycles . On August 14, 1909, Lingenfelder won the 10-mile race in Indianapolis on the NSU 7 1/2 PS .
