Motor of the Superfox

The NSU Superfox 125 OSB is a motorcycle by NSU Werke AG in Neckarsulm , which was built from 1955 to 1957.

features

The NSU Superfox replaced the NSU Fox 101 OSB / 125 ZB in 1955 . Contrary to what the name suggests, it was not so much a further development of the original Fox, but rather a scaled-down NSU Max .

This can be seen, among other things, in the design of the motor, which, like the Max, was now equipped with an Ultramax control ; that is, the now overhead camshaft was driven by an intermediate shaft running at half the crankshaft speed and two push rods offset by a quarter turn. The internal structure of the engine and transmission and thus the position of the fully encapsulated drive chain on the left-hand side of the vehicle still show the origin of the NSU Fox . As with the Max and the Lux, NSU now led the intake air in front of the air filter through the frame - so-called "calming air" - and the engine had pressure circulation lubrication instead of the simple splash lubrication of the Fox. The construction of the frame and chassis were now based heavily on Max and Lux, but kept much smaller and lighter. The front and rear wheels were now interchangeable and quick to assemble thanks to quick-release axles. Some parts (tool box, battery box) are the same as those of the Max . Other innovations typical of the time were the profile handlebars made of pressed sheet metal, in which the cables were almost invisibly hidden.

The Superfox was the work of NSU chief designer Albert Roder . It was available in the colors black with gold decorative lines and Christiana blue with white decorative lines.

Market success

When the Superfox hit the market in 1955, the demand for motorcycles had already declined significantly. Although the Superfox was more modern than the old Fox, looked more like a real motorcycle and had significantly more power, only 15,530 units were built between 1955 and 1957.

From 1957 the successor was the NSU Maxi 175 OSB, in principle an enlarged Superfox with 175 cm³ displacement and lateral spring struts at the rear. However, NSU used 18 "wheels for the first time with the Maxi instead of the 19" wheels that had been used throughout.

Licensing law (Germany)

Originally the Superfox was a fully fledged motorcycle in terms of registration. It was subject to registration , tax and insurance, had a vehicle registration document and vehicle registration document and had to be driven with a class 1 motorcycle license. In the mid-1990s, the limit for light motorcycles was raised from 80 cm³ to 125 cm³. The Superföxe (like all other older 125ccs) suddenly became light motorcycles .

This means that it is no longer subject to registration and is tax-free . Instead of a vehicle registration document, all she needs now is an operating permit. However, it must still have its own registration number. The tax exemption only exists if the vehicle documents are issued for a light motorcycle, i.e. have been rewritten.

Class A1 is now sufficient as a driving license, but the driver must be at least 18 years old due to the maximum speed of 95 km / h. Since January 18, 2013, the day on which the 80 km / h limit for 125 cm³ motorcycles was lifted, even 16-year-olds, provided they have a class A1 driving license, have been allowed to use the NSU Drive Superfox. Older drivers who acquired their class 3 driver's license before April 1, 1980 have been allowed to drive the Superfox since then, since light motorcycles were included in class 3 up to April 1, 1980.
