The Markeli Point (English; Bulgarian нос Маркели nos Markeli ) is an ice-free and 1.2 km long headland on the northeast coast of Smith Island in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . It protrudes 14.5 km southwest of Cape Smith , 2 km south-southwest of Gregory Point and 19.8 km north-northeast of Cape James in a west-southwest direction in the Drake Street and forms the north side of the entrance to Cabut Cove .
Bulgarian scientists mapped it in 2009. The Bulgarian Commission for Antarctic Geographical Names named it in 2008 after the medieval fortress of Markeli in southeastern Bulgaria .
