Markku Kivinen

Markku Kivinen (born June 5, 1951 in Helsinki ) is a Finnish sociologist.

Life

Markku Kivinen is a son of the Finnish politician Sulo Kivinen , his brother Mikko Kivinen works as an actor.

Kivinen studied philosophy and sociology at the University of Helsinki . In 1990 he received his doctorate. He is a professor at the University of Helsinki and since 1996 director of the Aleksanteri Institute , where research on Russia and Eastern Europe is carried out in Finland. In 2001 he was visiting professor at the University of Michigan . The project he heads for research into the modernization process in Russia ( Venäjän modernisaation valinnat ) has been awarded the status of a center of excellence by the Academy of Finland . Kivinen has over 300 publications. His sociological research focuses on power , social classes and cultural structures .

Kivinen was awarded the Finnish Order of the White Rose in 2009.

In his debut novel Betongötter (Betonijumalia, German 2014 by Secession Verlag für Literatur ) , published in 2009, the author went to the concrete settlement Tapiola in the Finnish city of Espoo, which was planned in the 1950s and 1960s as an exemplary model .
