Markscheider Kunst ( Russian Маркшейдер Кунст ) is a Russian world music band from Saint Petersburg .

The band was formed in 1992. The unusual name comes from the German miner's language: “ Markscheider ” refers to a surveyor in the mining industry. Almost all of the band members are former mining students. Her musical style is very unique and, apart from the Russian language, cannot be compared with other groups from the region, such as Auktyon or Leningrad . The reason for this is their former Congolese frontman Seraphim Makangila, who now only tours sporadically and mainly pursues solo projects. His influence broadened their horizons and brought them closer to dance music styles from his home country, for example the soukous and reggae . Over the years there was also a brass and rhythm section. They play a kind of Afro- Salsa fusion of Latin , Salsa , Rumba , Afrocuban and Ska. The side project St. Petersburg Jazz-Ska Review with Spitfire has existed since 2001 .

The band tours frequently across Europe. Two of their songs are featured on the CD compilation Russendisko -Hits . They are on the sampler Russensoul with Kokeiro . In 2003 they were the top act of the Alternative Festival St. Petersburg in Hamburg , held on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of their hometown. They canceled the official festivities there because the organizers only wanted to pay them a symbolic fee.
