history

The Calvörde market square around 1900

In 1343 the first town hall of Calvörde stood on the market square, which burned down in 1492. All the predecessors of today's St. George Church stood here on the market. The first school also stood here early on. The appearance of the marketplace has changed 5 times in the past hundred years. Many markets were held on the square in the Middle Ages because the way to the next town was too far and Calvörde in the Calvörde office had no direct connection to the Braunschweig heartland. The square was also a central point of the Salzstrasse (freight route) which led from Leipzig via Calvörde to Lüneburg.

There used to be four large cattle markets on the market square.

On March 9, 1913, a large festival was held on the market square to mark the centenary of the national liberation (from 1813) against Napoleon's foreign rule, and today's large memorial stone with a weight of 22 tons was erected for this purpose. It is supposed to symbolize the symbol of German power and strength, German life and also German death for the fatherland. But in 1945 a cemetery for the Soviet dead was built on the market square with obelisks , and the large memorial stone was lifted into the ground. In 1986 this memorial stone was rebuilt in its place.

today

Today the market square (around 1090 m²) houses the St. George Church , the Brothers Grimm School , the Rathskeller and the large memorial stone that was erected to mark the centenary of the national liberation. Today markets are still held according to tradition. In 1996 the market town celebrated its 800th anniversary. Since September 12, 2009, the market square has one attraction: six stumbling blocks were laid in front of the former house of the Jewish Bloch family by the artist Gunter Demnig .
