The house on Marktplatz 5

The house Marktplatz 5 (formerly house number 81) is a listed building in the old town of the Lower Franconian town of Volkach . In the past, the building was used as a dye works and the Gasthof zur Mainbrücke was housed in it; today it is the Behringer Hotel and Restaurant.

history

The house was built in the 16th century. At that time the city needed a new cloth house because the old one on the site of today's town hall had been demolished in 1544 in order to create a representative administrative building. In the new building, the cloths were dyed and then offered for sale in the arcades of the new town hall . The dyeing of cloths was only done there for a short time, because they quickly switched to importing cloths.

From then on, the mighty building was used as a residential building. In 1689 Andreas Pfeifer is proven there. Several vineyards in the surrounding area and some animals belonged to the building. Nine years later, in 1698, Frantz Speiser (senior), Rector by trade, was sitting in the building. He died that same year and his widow held the property. The Speisers were still the owners of the house on Marktplatz in 1713, their son Frantz Speiser (junior) lived there and also managed the associated garden property on Götzenbach near the western city moat .

The Östreicher family then came into possession of the house. In 1730 Jörg Peter Östreicher lived in the building, in 1736 Johann Peter Östreicher sat there. In 1771 Georg Michel Östreicher was the owner of the house, but he himself lived in Aub . In 1800 the house was first used as an inn by the landlord Franz Duomis. In 1803, Philipp Kraus, another dyer, took over the property, renting it from council member Andreas Blasius.

The Kraus family used the house again as a dye works . Philipp Johann Kraus was still working there as a dyer in 1823. His widow Maria Kraus bought the house from the Blasius family in 1824. Maria Kraus probably continued to run the dye works. In 1843 Jacob Kraus took over the dyeing business. In the meantime, in addition to the actual house, there was also a stable and a cellar on the property, which housed a wine press .

In 1892, the landlord Johann Baptist Heinrich began converting it to the Mainbrücke inn . In 1903 Michael Panzer took over the inn. Nikolaus Behringer bought the property from the Düll brewery in Krautheim in 1928 . In 1951 Anni and Arthur Behringer were the restaurant owners. From 1985 the building was comprehensively renewed, Klaus Behringer converted the house into a hotel with an inn. Today the house is owned by Klaus and Ulrike Behringer.
