The market square cross is a listed building on the market square in Nörvenich , Düren district , North Rhine-Westphalia .

Originally, the cross stood about five meters from the property boundary between the houses Marktplatz 8 and 10. In 1965, for traffic-related reasons, when the marketplace was redesigned to its present location in front of the Barrensteinhaus.

On January 2, 1945, an aerial bomb detonated on the Roggendorf farm in nearby Hirtstrasse 1 , killing three people and destroying the cross, which was only a few meters away. In 1950 it was restored by Franz Schiffer, a master stonemason from Düren , and rebuilt in its old location. The substructure consisting of two stone blocks was recycled from the destroyed cross. The actual cross has been renewed from sandstone . In 1945 the old head of the Christ corpus , which had remained intact, was secured. It was worked into the new cross by the stonemason and is now weathered almost beyond recognition.

A stone hardening carried out in 1978 in a restoration workshop in Waldbröl had no lasting effect.

It is not known when this cross was originally erected. According to oral tradition, the year 1616 was once carved on the substructure. According to the homeland sheets of the time, the writing LaVs soLI Deo was legible in 1936 (God alone is honor). In 1972 only LaVs remained, today the letters have completely disappeared.

The cross, rebuilt in 1950, bears a Latin inscription on the cross beam that reads:

EX STRUCTA A TEMPORIBUS IMMEMORA BILIBUS
REPOSITA IN ADVIRSIS TATE ANNO 1616
DELETA IN BELLO CRUDELI BOMBARDA EXPLO. ANNO1944
RENOVATA SUB PIE- anno 1950

That means loosely translated: Erected before primeval times, restored in 1616, smashed in the cruel war by an exploding bomb in 1944, renewed under piety in 1950. (Instead of 1944, it should read 1945 correctly.)

Up until the years before the Second World War , the fourth sacramental blessing was given on Corpus Christi day at the end of the procession at the market square cross .

The cross and the pump were entered on March 20, 1985 in the monument list of the municipality of Nörvenich under No. 47.
