Market square (Nörvenich)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The market square in Nörvenich , a municipality in the Düren district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ), is a traffic junction where the two main urban entrances meet.

Today's market square was already designated in the rent directory of the Nörvenich office in 1755 as am Platz . During the National Socialist era , the square was renamed Adolf-Hitler-Platz .

Bahnhofstrasse , Burgstrasse , Zülpicher Strasse and Hirtstrasse meet on the market square . The Bahnhofstrasse, Marktplatz, Burgstrasse and Am Kreuzberg streets with the Heiligenhaus lead from the B 477 across the town towards Pingsheim and Erftstadt . In 1926 the road was first paved with bluestone paving .

Before 1934 this street was called Provinzialstraße . Until the 1980s, the street was a classified state road with the number 263. Due to the bypass, it lost its importance and was downgraded to a municipal road.

The market square was the center of the former village. The maypole was set up here, the fair booths and carousels stood here, and this is where the traveling stage pitched its tent. At almost any time of day, groups of young people or adults met in the center of the village.

On May 1, 1934, a German oak was planted here, which was protected by an iron grille decorated with a swastika . Right next to it was a showcase with the anti-Semitic propaganda paper Der Stürmer . Everything was removed after the war ended in 1945.

At the edge of the square is the listed market square cross in a small green area , right next to it is the so-called duck fountain, which the longtime honorary mayor Heinrich Kuss received as a gift.

The marketplace was completely redesigned between May 27, 2019 and May 2020. On August 25, 2020, a weekly market took place on the market square again after 25 years.
