Markus Abwerzger (born October 14, 1975 in Dornbirn ) is an Austrian lawyer and politician ( FPÖ ). Between 2012 and 2015 he was the club chairman of the FPÖ parliamentary group in the Innsbruck local council, since October 2015 he has been a member of the Tyrolean state parliament and since July 2013 elected state party chairman of the Tyrolean state group of the FPÖ.

Abwerzger attended the sports high school in Dornbirn, which he graduated in 1996 with the Matura. He then began to study law and political science at the University of Innsbruck . In December 1996 he joined the University Choir of Skalds , of which he is still a member today. After completing his studies, he completed his military service in the Austrian Armed Forces and then began his judicial year. He began his professional career as a trainee in a law firm in Innsbruck. He has been working as a freelance lawyer in Innsbruck since September 2009.

Political activity

Markus Abwerzger's political career began at the age of 17 at the Ring Freiheitlicher Jugend in Vorarlberg. There he was on the state board and as chairman of the Dornbirn local group. During his studies in Innsbruck Abwerzger was also active in the Ring of Freedom Students , where he ran as a top candidate in the 1999 ÖH election and last represented the RFS on the main committee of the ÖH at the University of Innsbruck. After the differences within the party and the separation of the BZÖ, Abwerzger decided to get actively involved in the FPÖ. Since then Abwerzger has been a member of the FPÖ district party leadership in Innsbruck, first as a member, then as a deputy chairman.

With the Innsbruck municipal council election in April 2012, in which he ran for the FPÖ in fourth place on the list, he moved into the Innsbruck municipal council and was elected club chairman by his parliamentary group. On December 12, 2012 he was elected city party chairman with 90 percent at the city party conference of the Innsbruck FPÖ. At the city party conference on April 15, 2016, Abwerzger handed this function over to the state parliamentary club chairman of the Tyrolean Freedom Party, Rudi Federspiel. At the regional party conference in July 2013, Markus Abwerzger was elected as the new regional party leader of the FPÖ Tirol with a result of 94.35 percent.

In autumn 2015 there was a castling in the liberal state parliament in Tyrol, with which Markus Abwerzger, originally nineteen on the list , was able to fill the mandate that became vacant after Hildegard Schwaiger's withdrawal by renouncing twelve candidates before him . Since his inauguration on October 7, 2015, he has been the club's deputy chairman and sits on the Committee on Society, Education, Culture and Sport as well as on the Committee on Legal, Community and Regional Planning Matters.

On January 9, 2016, Abwerzger was finally confirmed in Kufstein at the 31st Ordinary State Party Congress of the Tyrolean Freedom Party with a result of 91 percent in his function as state party leader for a further three years.

In the election campaign for the Tyrolean state elections on February 25, 2018, Markus Abwerzger acted as the top candidate of the Tyrolean FPÖ, which was able to book a plus of + 6.13% on the evening of the election with 15.53%, and thus 5 seats (+1). In the constituency of Innsbruck-Stadt, where Abwerzger ran as the constituency top candidate, the FPÖ was able to secure a direct mandate in the constituency with 8,321 votes, and Abwerzger himself was able to refer all other candidates from all parties to the places with 2,568 preferential votes.

As a result of an ORF report that suggested Abwerzger to be close to anti-Semitism , he brought multiple charges against the broadcaster, including defamation . In April 2018, a settlement was reached at the Vienna Criminal Court . The ORF took over all court and legal fees and donated 8,000 euros.
