Markus Keusgen (born May 28, 1968 in Duisburg ) is a former German amateur boxer in the light heavyweight division .

Private

Markus Keusgen completed an apprenticeship as a welder at Thyssen Stahl AG in Duisburg after finishing school . He grew up as a half-orphan after the early death of his father, who died in a tragic accident at work. Boxing at the Westende Hamborn association gave the young person the necessary stability in life. His coach at the time, Hans Westerfeld , was also a kind of father substitute for Keusgen. Keusgen became his most successful student.

Career

With numerous youth and junior titles at Lower Rhine, West German and German championships, Keusgen crowned his youth career with the title of Junior Vice European Champion. It was only in the 1986 final that he was beaten by a 2: 3 judge's vote to the GDR champion Axel Schulz . In the adult class, Keusgen boxed his way up to the 1st Bundesliga. He ensured a changing of the guard at the German championships by winning over greats like Markus Bott and Thorsten Spürgin and was up to then the youngest German light heavyweight champion, the class up to 81 kg. As a senior he boxed in the national relay and achieved numerous international tournament victories and championship successes for Germany. At the European Championships in Athens in 1989 , he lost in the quarter-finals to later European champion Sven Lange from the GDR.

After boxing

Keusgen now lives very secluded in his hometown Duisburg . Due to a chronic illness, he can no longer pursue regular activities.
