Sven Lange (born January 10, 1967 in Bützow , † March 2, 1992 near Schwerin ) was a German boxer . He was European champion of amateurs in 1989 in the light heavyweight division.

Life

Sven Lange started boxing at the Tractor Wendorf Sports Club at the age of 10 . His first trainer was his father Karl-August Lange. The very talented athlete has already had great success in the youth field. In the age groups 13 to 17, he was five times GDR champion and in 1981 and 1983 Spartakiade winner. In 1980 he came to the GDR top club SC Traktor Schwerin , where he was trained by Otto Ramin. Over the years, he grew up to be an athlete who was 1.92 meters tall and boxed mostly light heavyweight but also heavyweight.

His first big success in international boxing came in 1985, where he took 3rd place at the Junior World Championships in Bucharest in the middleweight division. In the same year he was already GDR heavyweight champion, where he defeated Maik Heydeck on points in the final.

In 1986 he was again GDR heavyweight champion with a victory over the same boxer. This year he took 2nd place in the heavyweight division at the Chemistry Cup in Halle (Saale) . In the final he was defeated by the Olympic champion in 1992 and 1996 Félix Savón from Cuba by breaking off in the 3rd round. He also finished 2nd at the TSC tournament in Berlin. He was defeated in the final by Maik Heydeck by breaking off in the 1st round.

In 1987 Sven Lange was absent from the GDR championship due to injury, but in 1988 he was GDR light heavyweight champions. At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul , however, René Suetovius in the light heavyweight division and Maik Heydeck in the heavyweight division were preferred to him. In 1989 Sven Lange was GDR light heavyweight champion again and defeated the eventual Olympic champion Torsten May on points (18: 7) in the semifinals . In 1989 it was finally used at an international championship, the European championship in Athens. He defeated there in the light heavyweight Markus Keusgen from Germany (5: 0 judges votes), Sergei Kobonzew, Russia (5: 0) and Lajos Erös from Hungary (4: 1) on points and thus became the new European champion .

In 1990 there were no more championships in the GDR. Sven Lange stayed in Schwerin after German reunification and boxed for the newly founded Schwerin SC . On December 7, 1990, he defeated the so-called German unification country fight DABV against DBV in Bochum Bert Teuchert from Freiburg in the heavyweight division on points. In 1991 Sven Lange lost in the first German championship after reunification in the light heavyweight division against Torsten May on points (0: 5 judges' votes) and at the Chemistry Cup in 1991 he suffered a defeat against Dariusz Michalczewski .

On March 2, 1992, Sven Lange had a fatal accident in a traffic accident near Schwerin. He left a wife and a child.

In memory of the boxer, BC Traktor Schwerin has been holding the Sven Lange memorial tournament since 2013.
