Markus Krötzsch , (born May 6, 1981 in Rodewisch ) is a German computer scientist.

After graduating from high school in Auerbach im Vogtland (1999), Krötzsch studied computer science and logic at the TU Dresden from 2000 with a master’s degree in 2005. After that he worked as a research assistant at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology until his doctorate (Dr. rer. Pol.) In 2010 (Knowledge Management Group, Institute for Applied Computer Science and Formal Description Languages, AFIB) with Rudi Studer . From 2010 to 2013 he was at the University of Oxford in the Information Systems Research Group with Ian Horrocks , most recently as Department Lecturer . In 2013 he became Emmy Noether Junior Research Group Leader at the Institute for Theoretical Computer Science at TU Dresden, where he became Professor of Knowledge-Based Systems in 2016.

Krötzsch deals with knowledge-based systems, the complexity of logical reasoning, ontology languages, knowledge graphs and the semantic web . With Denny Vrandečić he is a co-developer of Semantic MediaWiki (SMW). The project was also the inspiration for Wikidata and Krötzsch works closely with the Wikidata developers.

Krötzsch is also doing research at the TU Center for Advanced Electronics Dresden (cfaed) on powerful programs with low power consumption and is co-editor of the W3C standard of the Web Ontology Language OWL 2.

In 2016 he received the Heinz Maier Leibnitz Prize .
