Markus Maria Hess (born April 6, 1959 in Washington, DC ) is a German medic . Hess is a specialist in ear, nose and throat medicine and a specialist in phoniatrics and pediatric audiology . Since 1998 he has been Director of the Clinic and Polyclinic for Hearing, Voice and Speech Medicine (Phoniatrics and Pedaudiology) at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE). Hess is the head of the German Voice Clinic, which he founded in 2014 on the UKE premises. Hess became known for complex microsurgical interventions with which he enabled professional speakers and singers to continue their careers.

Career

Hess was born in 1959 in Washington, DC, USA, the youngest of four children. The family lived in the USA because their father Eduard Hess worked there as a scientific attaché for the German embassy. The family stayed in the United States until 1966, when they returned to Germany. Hess went to school in Frankfurt, Königstein / Taunus and Hanau and graduated with distinction in 1978. This was followed by studying human medicine in Mainz from 1978 to 1985 and taking the American medical examination (ECFMG). In 1985 he completed his doctorate on high-resolution thyroid sonography at the University Medical Center of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz . After completing basic military service as a medical officer for over 18 months, he continued his training as a specialist in ENT medicine from 1987 to 1991 at the University ENT Clinic in Düsseldorf under Karl-Heinz Vosteen. In 1992 he moved to Phoniatrics / Pedaudiology at the Free University (FU) Berlin in Steglitz under Manfred Gross. From 1993 to 1997 he was a senior physician at the Clinic for Phoniatrics and Pedaudiology at the Free University of Berlin. In 1995 he became a specialist in phoniatrics / pediatric audiology. He received his habilitation in 1995 on the subject of contact pressure measurement in the larynx. In 1997/1998, Hess received a grant from the Heisenberg Program of the German Research Foundation (DFG) to conduct research at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital . His mentor there was Steven M. Zeitels (Center for Laryngeal Surgery and Voice Rehabilitation and MGH Voice Center). In 1997, Hess received two calls: to the RWTH Aachen University Clinic and the Hamburg-Eppendorf University Clinic. He went to Hamburg and has been head of the Polyclinic for Hearing, Voice and Speech Medicine there since 1998. In October 2014 he founded the German Voice Clinic together with Susanne Fleischer and Frank Müller. He continues his academic work in research and teaching as a faculty member of the UKE. Hess lives in Hamburg, is married and has three children.

Services

Hess deals with endoscopic and phonosurgical procedures, especially phonomicrosurgery and operations on awake patients. His special focus is on the treatment of voice disorders as well as the treatment of those affected in speaking and singing professions (professional speakers, singers, moderators). For several years now, Hess has specialized in the feminization of the voice of transsexual women. He also specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of recurrent palsy and papillomas, but also in voice rehabilitation after tumor operations on the vocal cords and larynx. According to his own statements, Hess carries out the most phonosurgical operations in Europe (600 phonosurgical operations per year). In addition to clinical and scientific improvements in the diagnosis and therapy of voice disorders, Hess holds a patent for LED stroboscopy. Hess carries out multiple interventions with CO 2 lasers, diode lasers and KTP lasers, outpatient relines (augmentations), thyroplasties and botulinum toxin treatments. In research and science he is engaged in a. with the establishment of a picosecond infrared laser (PIRL) for the scar-free treatment of the smallest lesions of the vocal folds in cooperation with an international working group led by RJ Dwayne Miller from DESY. He developed microsurgical instruments and endoscopy systems with various companies. In his research, Hess also focused on voice physiology, vocal fold analysis and voice disorders of various causes. He lectures at congresses and gives courses on topics related to voice and phonosurgery.
