Marlene Amstad

Marlene Amstad (born September 20, 1968 in Bern ) is a Swiss economist. She is a full professor of economics at the Chinese University Hong Kong , Shenzhen and the co-head of the local Fintech Center at the Shenzhen Finance Institute. Since 2007 she has been a lecturer in money, financial markets and regulation at the University of Bern , Switzerland . On March 13, 2020, the elected Swiss Federal Council sent by January 1, 2021 as President of the Board of Directors of the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA ). Marlene Amstad was elected by the Federal Department of Finance (FDF) due to her excellent knowledge of the Swiss financial markets and infrastructure as well as the associated institutions.

education

Marlene Amstad studied economics at the University of Bern from 1988–1994 and received her doctorate in 2000 from the University of St. Gallen ( summa cum laude ).

Professional activities

Marlene Amstad worked from 1994 to 2000 as an economist for the economic research center at ETH Zurich . She then worked for Credit Suisse in quantitative credit risk management (2000–2001). From 2004 to 2005 she conducted research on inflation indicators at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York . At the Swiss National Bank she worked from 2006 - 2011 as deputy director and head of investment strategy and financial market analysis and from 2002 - 2004 as an economist in the research department. From 2011 to 2015 Marlene Amstad was regional advisor for the 11 largest Asian central banks at the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) in Hong Kong.

Marlene Amstad deepened her research in the USA on the use of large data sets for real-time forecasts. The indicator she developed is calculated and published by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York to this day. She deals intensively with the topics of fintech, blockchain and digital currencies and has published a textbook on this with the Asian Development Bank.

Mandates

She has been a member of the Board of Directors since 2016 and Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors of FINMA since 2018. From 2017 to 2018, Marlene Amstad was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Swiss Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong.

Private life

Marlene Amstad is married and lives with her husband in Shenzhen, Hong Kong, but commutes between China and Switzerland.
