Marlene Engel

Marlene Engel (born December 29, 1984 in Krems an der Donau ) is a Vienna-based music curator, cultural manager and activist who works under the alias Citizen Curator.

Life

During her studies in philosophy and international business administration , Engel began to organize autonomous concerts and club events together with Rana Farahani (alias FAUNA) and worked as a freelancer at the sound: frame festival in Vienna.

In 2013 she founded the event series BLISS and worked as a freelancer at the Donaufestival in Krems an der Donau. The BLISS event series took place at different locations depending on the program, including the Kunsthalle Wien (2013), F23 (2016) or Club U (2012). In 2016, the art magazine Flash Art counted the BLISS event series among the most influential club events in the world. The graphic designer and artist Esther Straganz was responsible for the visual identity. In 2014, Marlene Engel began working as a curator and production employee at the Elevate Festival in Graz.

Engel has been working as a curator at the Wiener Festwochen since 2016 . There she is mainly responsible for the content of the Hyperreality, Festival for Club Culture and other music projects. The British magazine The Guardian named the Hyperreality Festival as one of the top five experimental electronic music festivals in the world in 2017. The festival is scheduled to take place for the second time in 2018.
